99 Problems but a LOGO ain't one: How to design the perfect Logo for your Brand

You only have one chance to make a GREAT first impression! It can be an overwhelming process not knowing what colours to choose, font style, or whether you should add a graphic or not. As a business owner myself I know the importance of a great first impression and the professionalism that comes along with it. Which is why deciding on a logo to represent your brand one will be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make as a business owner. The right logo will build trust in your brand and set you apart from the competition. You’ll include it on social posts, presentation decks, marketing materials, business cards and more. But no pressure right! Don’t worry I got you. I'm here to help guide you through...

Take law firms for example. You want a lawyer to feel trustworthy and respectable, party planners to feel organized and fun, just as you would want a yoga teacher to feel calm and gentle,

VIBE CHECK: A brand vibe is how you want your brand to make people feel. It should be consistent across your logo & content, and clearly set out in your brand guidelines.

Spend five minutes right now writing down three or four words that how you want your brand to make people feel. Asking yourself the following questions will help get to the bottom of your brand identity.

  1. Your Mission.... This is your Why. Why did you start this business?

  2. What beliefs and values are important to you as a company?

  3. What do you do better than anyone else? What makes you special or sets you apart?

  4. If you could describe your brand in three words, what would they be?

Now that you have a better idea of where you're headed down the brand identity highway, it's time to design that logo. These six qualities will make any logo instantly identifiable, and ensure that when consumers look at it, they'll connect with your brand. A good logo should:

  1. Be eye catching but simple. Many of the most impactful and successful logos in history are surprisingly simple.

  2. Be timeless. Use simple shapes, and no overly complicated graphical elements.

  3. Be memorable. A memorable logo is the base of a successful brand. Think of Apple or Nike, or Mastercard for example.

  4. Be relevant to your product or service. Your logo should be appropriate for your intended audience.

  5. Be versatile. Your logo must work well large or small and look good in a variety of different colours.

  6. Incorporate your brand vibe.

Logo design is a serious investment for your business. It’s a brand asset that has high potential value for your company, so I always recommend to hiring a professional logo designer from the start. Graphic designers need to have an eye for creative and are trained in attention-grabbing designs.

Another very important quality for a graphic designer is the understanding of current trends because logo designers also need to be visionary. Clients don’t often know exactly what they're looking for. It is the responsibility of the logo designer to explain their vision for the client and to do so in a way that helps the client understand the vision and be excited about it.

If you decide that you need a graphic designers services, then be willing to spend a bit of money to get quality. The saying “You get what you pay for” definitely applies here. So have a little faith and be willing to give a local freelancers a chance. Not only are they located in your city but they also understand your demographic, helping get your message and brand vibe across all platforms.
